Breast Augmentation surgery, also known as breast enlargement surgery, involves the placement of a saline or silicone breast implant to increase breast size or restore fullness to the breast after weight loss or childbearing. The choice of a saline or silicone breast implant and size of the implant is an individual decision. Our board-certified plastic surgeon will help guide your decision based on your desired outcome, body type and health history.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under a general anesthesia and takes about one hour. The length and location of the incisions depend on the size and type of breast implant used, with the most common incision being placed in the breast crease. Once the incision is made, a pocket, or space, is created for the implant. The implant is positioned and the incision closed. While breast augmentation will help to correct slight drooping, it will not correct significant breast sagging or drooping. A mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, may be performed at the same time as a breast augmentation to increase breast size and restore a more youthful appearance to the breasts.
A post-operative bra, similar to a sports bra, is worn after surgery to help minimize swelling and bruising and for added support. Following a breast augmentation procedure most patients experience a tight sensation in the breast area, which may last for several weeks as the skin and muscle relax and accommodate the breast implant. Breast augmentation patients should plan on taking a week off from work to recover and avoid any strenuous lifting or exercise for about four weeks after surgery.
