Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure used to reduce localized fat deposits resistant to exercise and diet. Problem areas including the abdomen, thighs, hips, back and the chin respond well to liposuction surgery. Liposuction is not a weight loss tool. Ideal candidates are close to their goal weight, with minimal loose skin, and good muscle tone.

Liposuction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours depending on the areas addressed. Incisions are small and usually concealed within the natural folds of the body. A thin hollow tube, or cannula, is used to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The loose fat is then removed through the cannula using a surgical vacuum. A compression garment, such as a girdle or abdominal binder, is worn for 2 weeks following surgery to help minimize bruising and swelling. Areas of liposuction will have a firm feel that can last several months as the swelling and inflammation resolve. Bruising is normal with liposuction and can last up to 3-4 weeks depending on the individual. You should plan on taking a week off from work to recover and avoid any strenuous lifting or exercise for about two weeks after liposuction surgery.
