Eyelid Surgery

(Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty, sometimes referred to as an eye lift or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids, resulting in a rejuvenated appearance. Loose or sagging skin and excess fatty areas below the skin are routinely removed as part of an eyelid surgery procedure.

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under either a general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and takes between one to two hours to perform, depending on the individual patient. The incisions are located in the natural crease of the upper eyelids and just below the lower lash line for the lower eyelids. In some cases, an incision hidden inside the lower eyelid can be used, but only if excess fat is to be removed. Sutures are removed five to seven days following surgery.

Bruising and swelling is normal following eye lift surgery and will resolve over 2-4 weeks depending on the individual. It's not unusual for blepharoplasty patients to see bruising extending into the cheek area due to gravity. Makeup may be worn once the incisions have healed. Patients should plan on taking one to two weeks off from work to recover and avoid strenuous lifting or exercise for about four weeks after surgery.
